All Terrain Walkers are formidable armored fighting vehicles from the Star Wars universe, designed to traverse diverse terrains on mechanical legs. Employed by the Old Republic, the Galactic Empire, and the First Order, these walkers are used for ground assaults, reconnaissance, and transport. Throughout the saga, they have significantly influenced the outcomes of battles and the fates of key characters.
The All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) is a heavily armored assault walker used by Imperial forces to break through enemy lines with its immense bulk and firepower, and to deploy elite assault troops. Standing over 22 meters (72 feet) tall, the AT-AT is not only a weapon of considerable force but also a symbol of terror, often intimidating local populations into submission. Its towering height enables it to see over obstacles and provides a clear vantage point for its weaponry, housed in its reinforced head. The head features a pair of Class II heavy laser cannons, which can fire in quick succession or deliver a powerful single blast from long distances. Additionally, medium repeating blasters and targeting rangefinders are mounted on either side of the head. When deploying troops, the AT-AT uses harness-and-cable systems from extendable boom racks for disembarking soldiers and harnesses for speeder bikes exiting from the front and back.
The walker’s crew consists of two pilots and a vehicle commander. Though both pilots are highly trained, one typically serves as the driver while the other operates the weaponry. They receive specialized training to navigate the walker, utilizing terrain sensors in the head and footpads for stable movement, and their life-support suits are equipped with enhanced protection and durable power packs.
Despite their imposing nature, AT-ATs have several design weaknesses. They can struggle with challenging terrains like steep hills or swamps, and their high center of gravity and unstable legs make them prone to tripping. Their large size also makes them easy targets, especially on open ground, where their neck and underbelly are particularly vulnerable to blaster fire and missiles.
In the Battle of Hoth, General Veers leads Blizzard Force, a contingent of AT-ATs and AT-STs, to assault the Rebel Echo Base. The base’s shield system necessitates the use of slow-moving ground vehicles for penetration. During the battle, Blizzard Two is taken down by Wedge Antilles and Wes Janson, who use their snowspeeder’s tow cable to trip the walker and then target its exposed neck with blaster fire. Luke Skywalker destroys Blizzard Four by using a magnetic grapple to access its underbelly, cutting a hole with his lightsaber, and throwing in a grenade. Despite these setbacks, the Empire ultimately triumphs as Blizzard One destroys the shield generator, leading to a rout in which the remaining AT-ATs and AT-STs are ordered to overrun the Rebel trenches and capture as many survivors as possible.
The All Terrain Scout Transport (AT-ST) is a two-legged walker first seen in The Empire Strikes Back and prominently featured in Return of the Jedi. Often nicknamed the "chicken walker" due to its appearance, the AT-ST was designed to complement the slower-moving AT-ATs and Imperial tanks by protecting their flanks. In official merchandise, it is sometimes referred to as the "Scout Walker" instead of AT-ST. This versatile vehicle also saw action in the Battle of Endor and the Battle of Hoth. Its development can be traced back to earlier walker models like the AT-RT and AT-DP.
Built as a smaller counterpart to the AT-AT, the AT-ST’s bipedal design allows it to navigate rugged terrain and perform various tasks, including patrolling, reconnaissance, and cleanup operations. During major battles, AT-STs shield the sides of AT-ATs and target any infantry or smaller threats that evade the larger assault walkers. Equipped with a powerful gyro stabilizer, advanced shock absorbers, and terrain-measuring sensors in its footpads, the scout walker moves quickly and can access areas that would be impassable for an AT-AT. Its standard armament includes a chin-mounted twin medium blaster cannon, twin light blaster cannons, and a concussion grenade launcher on either side of the head. Variants of the AT-ST can be equipped with different side-mounted weapons, such as a light blaster cannon or concussion missile launcher.
The AT-ST is operated by a crew of two: one pilot manages the weaponry while the other drives the walker. Their gear includes fire-resistant boots, jumpsuits over basic armor plating, and helmets with telemetry receivers. The crew navigates the scout walker using forward viewports, viewscreens, and holoprojectors. Although the AT-ST's computer can handle level ground easily, pilots need to rely on their dexterity and balance to maneuver through challenging terrain.
To maintain its speed and agility, the AT-ST sacrifices some offensive and defensive capabilities. Its chin-mounted blasters are effective only up to 2 km (1.2 mi), and the side-mounted weapons have limited range. While its lightweight armor offers protection against blasters and small arms, it cannot withstand heavier laser cannons and missiles. Additionally, the AT-ST relies on high-intensity power cells for energy, as its compact size precludes a full power generator, limiting its operational range.
In The Empire Strikes Back, AT-STs provide scouting and support for the slower AT-ATs during the Battle of Hoth. After the shield generator is destroyed, they advance to capture fleeing Rebels. During the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi, AT-STs initially inflict heavy losses on the Rebels and Ewoks, but several are destroyed when they fall victim to Ewok traps, such as being crushed by tree trunks swung on ropes. One AT-ST is commandeered by Chewbacca, who uses his strength to tear open its roof hatch and turn its weapons against the other walkers, aiding the Rebel victory.
An updated version of the AT-ST appears in The Last Jedi during the Battle of Crait. This model, used by the First Order, features improved stability and enhanced protection thanks to new lightweight armor plating
In the Star Wars universe, speeder bikes are a type of "repulsorcraft," utilizing anti-gravity technology known as repulsorlifts to hover above planetary surfaces. To maximize speed and agility, speeder bikes are streamlined by omitting non-essential systems, making them faster and more maneuverable than other repulsorcraft. Swoop bikes, which are essentially just engines with seats, are similar but are designed for higher-altitude operations.
In the Legends video game Knights of the Old Republic, swoop racing plays a significant role in the storyline. The player joins The Hidden Beks, a swoop gang, and infiltrates their rival gang, The Black Vulkars, to compete in a swoop race and rescue Bastila. Swoop racing is depicted as a high-risk, high-speed competition involving highly skilled pilots.
